Barnes & Noble have announced two new Android tablets which will launch in the UK at the end of November.

The first tablet, called the Nook HD, looks like a direct rival to Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire 2. The affordable Android tablet market is likely to be one of most competitive over the Christmas period and it'll be interesting to see who wins the battle.

Barnes & Noble's Nook HD (pictured above left) has a 7 inch IPS touch-screen display which runs at a resolution of 1,440x900 pixels. This gives it a PPI of 243ppi which higher than both of its rivals, while it weights just 315g.

The Nook HD is powered by a dual-core 1.3 Ghz processor and has 1GB of RAM, which stands up relatively well against the Kindle Fire , but the Nexus 7's quad-core chip provides more power. The Nook HD is available with either 8GB or 16GB of on-board memory , while it runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

The 8GB Nook HD will be priced at £159 , while the 16GB version will retail at £189 which is very similar to Google's Nexus 7. However, we can't help feeling that Google's tablet is still the better buy thanks to the inclusion of Jelly Bean and its quad-core processor.

The second tablet unveiled by Barnes and Noble was the Nook HD+ (pictured above right),  which is a larger premium tablet that is possibly gunning for the all-conquering iPad 2.

The Nook HD+ has a 9 inch touch-screen running at a resolution of 1,920x1,280 pixels. Amazingly, that means the tablet runs at a resolution about that of full HDTV (1080p) and makes it a truly stunning multi-media device.

Powering the Nook HD is a dual-core 1.5 Ghz processor , while it has 1GB of RAM and runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. It'll be available with a choice of 16GB or 32GB of on-board memory with the prices being £229 or £269 respectively.
