New survey data from analyst Baird analyst William Power provides further evidence that Apple is going to see explosive demand for the iPhone 5.
Power surveyed 2,000 U.S. Internet users in the second week of August. He notes that the sample skewed young and male. What he found is that people love their iPhones, and can’t wait to get a new one.
- 39% of the survey group said they are currently eligible for a handset upgrade; another 6% expect to eligible within 3 months.
- 45% of the upgrade-eligible group intend to buy an iPhone. 31% were undecided on their next phone. 22% plan to buy an Android phone.
- Power notes that those percentages could suggest 50 million-plus iPhone 5 units in the U.S. alone, “well above current forecasts.”
- The survey found that the features important in the new iPhone include: longer battery life, 4G/LTE, improved Siri, improved back camera and a larger screen. (Of course, no one knows exactly what Apple is planning for the iPhone 5, or even it will be called the iPhone 5.)
- 77% of current iPhone users plan to buy another one. 18% are undecided. 5% plan to switch to Android.
- Among Android users, 48% plan to buy another Android phone next, 34% are undecided and 17% plan to switch to an iPhone.
- Samsung tops the list of preferred Android OEMs, followed by HTC, Motorola and LG.
- Of current BlackBerry users, only 2% plan to buy another one.
- 51% said they would be interested in an Amazon smartphone. Only 7% are interested in a Facebook smartphone.
