Mastercard says 100,000 retailers in the UK can already accept NFC payments. It has also promised to help small businesses currently concerned about the high cost of adopting NFC equipment.
Other features that the companies intend to add include the ability to pay for goods or services directly from your bank account, without the need to pre-pay, and also the ability to transfer money directly to another person. Both features are part of the five-year plan.
There are several rival services expected to launch soon on the market: O2 Wallet app, Barclay’s Pingit app, and a few other services on the horizon from PayPal, Visa, and Google.
The digital wallet battle is well and truly on and, just like in the 4G network race, Everything Everywhere looks to have a head start.

With the rise of smartphones in the market new technologies are coming everyday and bringing changes in our life and making our life easier and simpler. Everything Everywhere the biggest mobile operator in UK in collaboration with MASTER CARD has brought the concept of payment by mobile through NFC.The carrier has over 27 million customers and the five-year plan with Mastercard will bring them the opportunity to use their smartphones to pay for goods and services.Working with MasterCard is an important step in making mobile contactless payments more widely available for our 27 million customers," said Gerry McQuade, Everything Everywhere's CMO, in the announcement.
Future products from the partners will include person-to-person money transfers, loyalty rewards and mobile commerce solutions, the companies said. A mobile point of sale solution will be launched later this year. THE main concept behind this is to bring a digital wallet system where you can allow people to transfer money into their mobile which they can then spend via NFC-enabled handsets. That means greater convenience, because the technology allows you to simply tap your phone at an NFC reader in order to pay.
