For Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console to have a shot at encroaching upon the success of its original Wii system, third party developers have to tap into the system’s strengths. In the case of Wii U, its strength is certainly the tablet-style controller, and Ubisoft has released a new video for its exclusive Wii U title ZombiU showcasing how the developers are doing precisely that.
The first in a series of videos focusing on the different aspects of the ZombiU universe finds senior producer Guillame Brunier dishing out survival tips. It also show Ubisoft embracing the tablet controller as an integral part of the experience.
When Ubisoft got their Wii U development kit, Brunier says they saw the potential it held and the team decided to treat the controller as the player’s in-game survival kit. The video depicts the gamepad being used to manage inventory, negotiate uncharted areas of the map, and used as a motion controller to shake off zombies.
There’s one feature, however, which gets me genuinely excited. Imagine using the touch controller for lock picking or hacking mechanics, as ZombiU’s primary screen shows a horde of zombies approaching at your back. It conveys a serious level of tension, and it’s small design choices like this that Nintendo will need to encourage in both its first party and third party games.
ZombiU is set to be a Wii U launch title, though Nintendo has yet to announce a release date outside of a “holiday 2012” window
